The Peace That Surpasses All Understanding
    ¢¸ 4 / 2 | 4 / 4 ¢º

    Today's Passage / [Psalm 3:1-8]

1 O LORD, how many are my foes! How many rise up against me!

2 Many are saying of me, "God will not deliver him."Selah

3 But you are a shield around me, O LORD; you bestow glory on me and lift up my head.

4 To the LORD I cry aloud, and he answers me from his holy hill. Selah

5 I lie down and sleep; I wake again, because the LORD sustains me.

6 I will not fear the tens of thousands drawn up against me on every side.

7 Arise, O LORD! Deliver me, O my God! Strike all my enemies on the jaw; break the teeth of the wicked.

8 From the LORD comes deliverance. May your blessing be on your people. Selah

    Main Verse

But you are a shield around me, O LORD; you bestow glory on me and lift up my head. Psalm 3:3

    REFLECTION

There once was a king who offered a prize to the artist who would paint the best picture of peace. Many artists tried. The king looked at all the pictures, but there were only two he really liked and he had to choose between them. One picture was of a calm lake. The lake was a perfect mirror for peaceful towering mountains were all around it. Overhead was a blue sky with fluffy white clouds. All who saw this picture thought that it was a perfect picture of peace. The other picture had mountains too. But these were rugged and bare. Above was an angry sky from which rain fell, in which lightening played. Down the side of the mountain tumbled a foaming waterfall. This did not look peaceful at all. But when the king looked, he saw behind the waterfall a tiny bush growing in a crack in the rock. In the bush a mother bird had built her nest. There, in the midst of the rush of angry water, sat the mother bird on her nest...perfect peace.

Which picture do you think won the prize? The king chose the second picture. "Because,"explained the king, "peace does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble, or hard work. Peace means to be in the midst of all those things and still be calm in your heart. That is the real meaning of peace."

King David understood this concept better than most of the people who have walked the face of this earth. This is one of the reasons why he has been called "A man after God's own heart."In this Psalm, we find David surrounded by his enemies. David has fled from his son Absalom, who had begun a rebellion against his father's throne (the entire narrative is recorded in 2 Samuel 11-19). David's life is in complete danger. He is surrounded by tens of thousands. If this were happening to me, I would be in a total panic by this point. Yet David was able to experience peace and calm through all this. In fact, David was able to lie down and sleep (v. 5). David knew the Lord would be his shield and protection even in this major predicament. David had already experienced plenty of extraordinary trials and tribulations during his lifetime. And the Lord had delivered him through them all. David realized that no matter what circumstance he found himself in, God had the power to redeem him. King David found peace in the Lord.

    DAILY PRAYER

Read Psalm 3 again as a prayer to God.

    APPLICATION

What is one trial or difficulty you are dealing with right now? Although it may not be "life-threatening,"it is still important to God.

    - Go to God in prayer and lift up this problem to Him. - Ask the Lord for His shield of protection and His hand of providence. - "Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you?(I Pet. 5:7). - Then receive His peace that surpasses all understanding.

No Jesus, No Peace Know Jesus, Know Peace
